Jean from ‘Vanitas no Suki’
This is a series that I don’t think is mentioned very often, so many people may not know about it.
The anime was adapted from the manga by the same name, written by Jun Mochizuki (Pandora Hearts is also written by him, in case some people are more familiar with it.). It is a vampire anime.
Anyway, this series itself is something that impressed me a lot. It has a good plot but it doesn’t overpower the romance section or fan service at all and the contrast and comedy is something that could easily make it to my top 10 funniest anime list for this series. Although there are many implications of who can have feelings for who, one of the most famous non-canon ships is Vani ex Noe (yes, I know I put Vanitas first and that’s because I love it in this Kind of like it, hahaha) which is even more famous than Jean X Vanites.
The reasons I like Jean’s character are:
Like a lot of series, where the female lead is shown to be very strong in the beginning but ends up being saved multiple times by the male lead, this series feels like reciprocity, where both Jean and Vanitas have only one way to go. Instead of saving each other, they saved each other.
For some reason strong female characters in anime are always overly serious or “it’s not like I like you or anything” aka tsunderes or super shy and while there is nothing wrong with that, I really don’t like these qualities. Tired because they are kind of overused. At first Gene checked out all of these features which made me want to give up on this series, but I didn’t and oh how grateful I am that I didn’t. He made a complete π red turn. To put it more simply she went from tsundere ➡️ yandere (though not by much) and if you’re wondering, yes, Vanitas was the exact opposite of that (and that was one of the biggest ironies of this series for me XD)
I said she went into yandere mode somewhat, but it wasn’t in an obsessive way, it was more like I wanted to protect her and take care of her and show my affection towards her in a good way.
Oh, did I mention how she dominates him while sucking his blood? In the beginning it was Vanitas who almost forced her to drink his blood but the more she drank his blood the more she got used to it and the last time he drank her blood in Season 2 it caused Vanitas to Had shaken it. That’s when she realized he might have a thing for her (but what he did later…. all I can say is it was hilarious)
In the series she has to play her role and take care of her own affairs, which results in them not bumping into each other too much, but from what I can see after meeting each other, the mangaka somehow manages to get them together. Was successful in keeping it. In almost every arc. Jean isn’t the strongest in the series, but she definitely makes an impact in the storyline.
This pairing may seem a little strange after all this, but they are strangely healthy (at least to me). They also have their moments and their own ways in which they console and care for the other. Overall, I really liked how her character was at the end of season 2, although that may just be because I’m a die-hard fan of the top ladies, but whatever.
Don’t know what will happen in volume 10 and whether or not I’ll continue to like her by the end of the series, but so far, she’s my favorite female character in the manga and anime.
