The exact founder of Labor Day is not completely clear. Some sources credit Matthew Maguire, while others believe Peter J. McGuire suggested the holiday. It was set on the first Monday in September to create a politically neutral holiday and to bridge the gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
