New Year’s Day marks the start of the year according to the Gregorian calendar, introduced in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII to correct inaccuracies in the Julian calendar. The Gregorian calendar is now widely used in many countries, including the United States. Some churches, especially those with Eastern European origins, still use other calendars.
